Seeking Competitive Teen Spirit For First Lego League In Ireland

Calling First and Second Year Students to take part in Ireland’s First LEGO League

Cork, 27 September 2017: A global science and technology challenge for secondary school students is currently rolling out in Ireland. One of 90 countries taking part in this year’s FIRST® LEGO® League, Irish students are currently being invited to participate in the world’s largest science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) problem solving competition!

Running across Leinster and Munster, the FIRST® LEGO® League is specifically designed for 1st and 2nd year students to create solutions for world issues, such as hydrodynamics, robotics, programming and other STEM areas, using LEGO. This year’s challenge involves a robot design challenge using the LEGO EV3 platform, the students will be empowered to complete a series of missions to achieve the highest possible score. A supporting research project is also evaluated as part of the competitive elements, and these are judged alongside teamwork, professionalism, quality, kindness and respect while learning, the core values of the First LEGO League challenge.

Learn it, the only official providers of LEGO education school workshops, teacher training and camps in Ireland, will provide all the equipment and support for the FIRST® LEGO® League. They expect to pilot the challenge in Ireland with 14 teams from Munster and 14 teams from Leinster, who will then go forward to participate at the UK & Ireland Finals held in the UK in 2018.

“Through this challenge, students will not only learn how to work together in teams, solve analytical and technical challenges, but they will be learning more about their own abilities in the field of science, technology, engineering and maths without the constrains of formal academia, and therefore there is great scope to have fun with these subjects, learn by doing, and get competitive spirit going between teams of 1st and 2nd year students,” said Olive Anne Horgan, Project Manager, Learn It.

The FIRST® LEGO® League is a collaboration between Learn it, Qualcomm, UCC School of Engineering and Cork Education Support Centre and directly supported by Science Foundation Ireland under the SFI Discover Programme.
