Biological Sciences is an exciting and rapidly developing subject area, with many applications in the pharmaceutical, food and healthcare, and agri-food industries. Biological Sciences is the study of life and living organisms. In particular, it is the study of how cells work and how they can function individually (like bacteria) or collectively (like plants and animals). There are many branches of study in Biology and many of these specialised areas can be studied in CIT’s Department of Biological Sciences.

The Common Biological Sciences programme is a two-year course designed for students interested in Biological Sciences as a career, but who may be unsure of which discipline to follow.

The scheme gives students the opportunity to see the three disciplines areas, first hand, through the various modules on offer, interaction with lecturers, and industrial site visits.

This allows the student to make an informed decision on their discipline of study.

On successfully completing this 2-year programme, students can enter the third year programme from any of the following Honours Biological Science Degrees:

  • (CR370 BSc (Honours) in Agri-Biosciences or
Graduates will be able to their apply their knowledge of the role of biotechnology in agri-food and animal sciences to support and develop technologies (e.g. health, reproduction and diagnostics) for the improvement of global agri-food production systems.
  • CR333 BSc (Honours) in Nutrition and Health Science or
Graduates will be able to apply their understanding of human nutrition and its role
in health and disease to various sectors of the food and health industry, and identify and address nutrition-related problems in individuals and populations.
  • CR325 BSc (Honours) in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology
Graduates will be able to grow and engineer biological cells in order to make safe and effective medicines using the most up-to-date information and technologies available.
