Architectural Technician

Architectural technologists and technicians are specialists in the science and technology of architecture, building design and construction. They work closely with architects and other building professionals, providing architectural design services for construction projects and developments.

Technologists negotiate the project and manage the design and construction process to completion which may involve:

  • producing feasibility studies, surveys and design solutions
  • leading and co-ordinating the design process
  • advising on environmental and regulatory requirements and ensuring that all aspects of the project comply with design, legal, statutory and professional requirements
  • advising on the choice of materials
  • producing documentation for statutory and local approval authorities
  • co-ordinating professionals and contractors working on a project, including scheduling the work.

Technicians work in support of technologists which may include:

  • preparing plans and drawings, using computer-aided design (CAD) as well as traditional drawing methods
  • preparing specifications and obtaining tenders
  • making site visits.

Architectural technologists/technicians also evaluate and advise on refurbishment, repair, reuse, recycling and deconstruction of buildings.

Chartered architectural technologists may practise on their own account.

Architectural technicians/technologists usually work from 9.00am to 5.00pm from Monday to Friday. Overtime may be necessary to meet deadlines. There is a limited amount of part-time work. Most work is based in the office, with some time spent visiting clients and sites.

Salaries may range from around €22,000 to €45,000 or more.

An architectural technologists/technician should:

  • have drawing skills and abilities
  • be able to visualise objects in three dimensions (3D)
  • have maths and computer skills
  • have organisation and management skills
  • be interested in the science and technology involved in building.

Most work in architectural technology practices, architecture practices or local authorities.

Chartered architectural technologists need a recognised qualification at degree level, followed by three years of professional practice which is recorded and assessed.
